Measurements of altitude and geographic latitude in Latin astronomy, 1100–1300

چکیده
Abstract This article surveys measurements of celestial (chiefly solar) altitudes documented from twelfth- and thirteenth-century Latin Europe. It consists four main parts providing (i) an overview the instruments available for altitude described in contemporary sources, viz. astrolabes, quadrants, shadow sticks, torquetum; (ii) a survey role played by determination geographic latitude, which takes into account more than 70 preserved estimates; (iii) case studies sets measured solar twelfth-century sources; (iv) in-depth discussion evidence relating to performed Paris period 1281–1290. The findings last part indicate that end thirteenth century Parisian astronomer had developed rigorous standards observational practice were typically precision minutes arc with level accuracy higher ± 0;5°, sometimes exceeding 0;1°.

On scaling cosmogenic nuclide production rates for altitude and latitude using cosmic-ray measurements
The wide use of cosmogenic nuclides for dating terrestrial landforms has prompted a renewed interest in characterizing the spatial distribution of terrestrial cosmic rays. Cosmic-ray measurements from neutron monitors, nuclear emulsions and cloud chambers have played an important role in developing new models for scaling cosmic-ray neutron intensities and, indirectly, cosmogenic production rate...
متن کاملGeographic control of Titan's mid-latitude clouds.
Observations of Titan's mid-latitude clouds from the W. M. Keck and Gemini Observatories show that they cluster near 350 degrees W longitude, 40 degrees S latitude. These clouds cannot be explained by a seasonal shift in global circulation and thus presumably reflect a mechanism on Titan such as geysering or cryovolcanism in this region. The rate of volatile release necessary to trigger cloud f...
متن کاملSYMPOSIUM Ectotherm Thermal Stress and Specialization Across Altitude and Latitude
Synopsis Gradients of air temperature, radiation, and other climatic factors change systematically but differently with altitude and latitude. We explore how these factors combine to produce altitudinal and latitudinal patterns of body temperature, thermal stress, and seasonal overlap that differ markedly from patterns based solely on air temperature. We use biophysical models to estimate body ...

متن کاملGeographic Altitude, Ocular Diseases and Injuries
Various ocular disorders remain a major concern for medical care providers and health policy makers. Only in the US more than 6.6 million people were affected by blindness in 2011 (1). Meanwhile, even though people mostly inhabit low or moderate altitudes, about 140 million people worldwide live above 2500 meters (2). Therefore, association between various vision disorders and high altitude rem...
